With less than 500 inhabitants, the city of Thompsonville, Michigan is known for two things: the skiing at Crystal Mountain and Iron Fish Distillery’s award-winning craft spirits. Founded by two married couples, Iron Fish Distillery is Michigan’s first farm distillery since Prohibition.

Founded in 2015 by Heidi Bogler, David Wallace, Sarah and Richard Anderson, Iron Fish Distillery had slowly been developing over the years. In 2011, Heidi and David bought a fallow farm with little idea of what to do with it. That changed in 2013 when David and Richard went to Scotland. While touring distilleries, they thought they could do this in Michigan. A few business and distilling classes later, Iron Fish Distillery was founded.

Iron Fish Distillery reworked the land of their revitalized farm, growing winter wheat and rye. Each of their award-winning gins, vodkas, whiskeys and rums get their start with those grains. If they don’t grow it, it’s sourced from fellow farmers in Northern Michigan. The result? A sip that warms you even on a winter day.
