Kentucky Derby

And they’re off in the Kentucky Derby!

The Kentucky Derby is the longest continuously held sporting event in America. In fact, this year marks its 145th official occurrence. And for nearly a century, the Mint Julep has stood by its side as the beverage of choice for Derby fans around the world.

The drink itself debuted at the Derby in the 1930s and has its roots in the eighteenth century. Churchill Downs Racetrack claims to serve nearly 120,000 Mint Juleps every year over the two-day weekend extravaganza. Of course, many more Juleps are enjoyed in the comfort of homes and establishments across the world this weekend.

To honor America’s greatest race, and to add a new experience to your home party, we’ve curated a list of thoroughbred craft Juleps (most with mint) for you to craft this Saturday afternoon. But just as the favorite horse doesn’t always “win”, “place”, or “show”, a Kentucky Bourbon doesn’t always make the best Julep. That’s why our list isn’t bourbon-exclusive, and for the recipes that do include it, none of them hail from the Bluegrass State.

Here are 10 Juleps, one for each furlong. Of course, we don’t suggest drinking all ten or you’ll probably wash out. We do promise you’ll deserve the garland of roses at the end of “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports” when you wager on BigFish recipes.

Quickly out front and along the inside we have...

Colonial Mint Julep - Catoctin Creek Distilling Co.

Ingredients:

  • 6 mint leaves, plus additional for garnish
  • 0.5 oz. brown sugar syrup
  • Crushed ice
  • 2 oz. Roundstone Rye

Directions:

Muddle the mint in the bottom of the glass, add the syrup and whisky, stir, and add crushed ice and more garnish mint.

Iron Julep - Ironclad Distillery Co.

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz. Ironclad Bourbon
  • 0.5 oz. grapefruit oleo saccharum
  • 6 mint leaves
  • 3 dashes Angostura bitters

Directions:

Muddle mint in a julep cup. Stir with crushed ice, top with freshly grated nutmeg. Garnish with a big mint sprig.

Missouri Mint Julep - StilL 630

Ingredients:

  • (2) 750ml bottles of RallyPoint Rye Whiskey
  • 32 mint stalks w/leaves  (6-10 good leaves per stalk) Additional mint at time of serving for garnishing.
  • 25 tsp. powdered sugar
  • 3/4 cup water

Directions:

Separate mint leaves evenly into four quart-sized mason jars. Muddle the mint in each jar. Divide the RallyPoint Rye Whiskey evenly between the four jars and set aside for 2-3 days. This will give the mint plenty of time to infuse into the whiskey. After 2-3 days, strain the whiskey out of the jars and, using a funnel, into the barrel.  Use the muddler again to squeeze the last of the whiskey out of the mint. Add powdered sugar and water into barrel. Replace the bung and give the barrel a good shake.  Then set aside for 2-3 weeks to let the barrel work its’ magic. If available, use traditional chilled silver cups for serving. Pour from spigot over crushed ice. Smack additional mint spring on table to open up aromatics and garnish. Bet on the right horse and enjoy!
