In December of 2014, Sourland Mountain Spirits founder Ray Disch decided he was ready for a new challenge. Craft distilling had become legal in New Jersey the year before, so creating a local distillery in his hometown of Hopewell seemed like the perfect endeavor. Working with a team of accomplished, visionary partners who listened to his dream and helped bring it to life, Ray was able to grow Sourland Mountain Spirits from an idea to a real business, which is now the ‘first farm distillery in New Jersey since Prohibition.’
The Sourland Mountains is the perfect setting for the distillery with their rich history of farmers, bootleggers, rebels, and fine craftsmen and artisans. Drawing from an aquifer at the base of the Sourland range, their spirits are made using water that is filtered through micro-fractures in the geologic formations of the mountains, protected by the largest contiguous forest in Central New Jersey. Since the distillery is surrounded by farms, it gives them the opportunity to incorporate the freshest ingredients into their carefully crafted spirits. From herbs to fruit to grain, there is a plethora of sustainable options they can choose from to truly make their spirits stand apart.
Ray and his wife Erica travelled to Hungary in August 2016 to secure state-of-the-art distillery equipment for their newly renovated barn behind Brick Farm Tavern. A unique location in New Jersey, it’s the only place that has a distillery, restaurant, and brewery on one site. At each stage of the process, they strive for the highest standards of flavor, aroma, quality, and consistency. Their goal isn’t just to make Sourland Mountain Spirits a success, but to also bring a local, handcrafted, sustainable product to the greater Hopewell community that they can all be proud of. They are proud to bring Sourland Mountain Spirits to Hopewell. It is Ray’s home and the perfect place to make their fine spirits.
